Vaccine for Cancer?
Maybe you have seen the recent commercials regarding the new cervical cancer vaccine. This vaccine, called Girdasil®, was approved by the FDA in June 2006. It targets four strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV) which account for causing about 70% of all cervical cancers. HPV one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the country, according to the CDC, with more than 20 million people currently infected and another 6.2 million contracting the virus each year. In the US, about 9,710 new cases of cervical cancer are expected this year and about 3,700 women will die of the disease this year. Girdasil® is approved for girls and women ages 9 to 26. Research suggests the vaccine lasts at least four years, but long term results are not yet certain.
